The Teesside Freeport provides one of Britain’s largest integrated industrial economies with the skills and workforce to match.

An industrial powerhouse

With one of the largest integrated industrial economies in the UK, the Tees Valley benefits from a readily available and highly skilled local workforce.

As well as being one of Britain’s biggest chemical clusters, the area boasts existing specialisms such as offshore energy, engineering and biomanufacturing with the skills and workforce to match. The region itself is home to 700,000 people with 2.5million living within an hour’s drive, with businesses also boasting strong links to nearby universities including Teesside, Durham, Newcastle, Leeds and York.

The area’s reputation as a powerhouse in industrial sectors also means that local authorities, schools and colleges are focused on creating a workforce that meets the needs of the local economy. These include Middlesbrough, Darlington, Hartlepool, Redcar & Cleveland and Stockton Riverside Colleges, which all deliver employer-led technical training across chemical and process, subsea, fabrication and welding. This is alongside dedicated, industry-led apprenticeship providers such as Falck Nutec, TTE, NETA and TWI.
